Gratuitous Food Porn: Shake Shack’s Shack Stack

Date March 23, 2010

Shake Shack really is that good.  There, I said it.  I’ve been reluctant to admit that for a long time because NYC Food Guy is not someone to buy into hype, especially when it involves a 30-minute wait.  But it’s not hype that surrounds Danny Meyer’s burger joint, just pure success.  And rightly so for the burger that combines the perfect balance of crispy and juicy beef with cheese, fresh vegetables, a decadent secret sauce, and a sweet, pillowy bun.  Well, this past week, I discovered a way to enhance if not completely aggrandize Shake Shack’s signature Shackburger:  The Shack Stack ($8.75). All it requires is the not so subtle addition of a cheddar and meunster cheese-stuffed, deep fried portobello mushroom atop the Shackburger.

Texture becomes the name of the game with the super crunchy deep fried shell giving way to a river of melted cheese that quickly overtakes the portobello.  Click ahead for the real food porn: the cross section shot!

I’m from Turkey. Yeah! From the other side of the world.
I love eating, and I love NYC.

When I came to NY two years ago, before coming, i found this website and checked NYC Food Guy’s reccomendations. And I went to Shake Shack and Burgerjoint thanks to NYC Food Guy… Both of them were delicious. And now I recommend them to everyone going to NY.

I hate that Shake Shack eventually sucks everyone in. I refused to like it for a good two years, but now I think about it daily, dream about it nightly, and fantasize about it when I’m knockin’ boots. I still don’t think the burger is THAT much better than the one at Cozy Soup ‘n’ Burger on Broadway and 8th, but the side items at Shake Shack are far superior. And you don’t have to deal with the surly waiters, either.

Shake Shack can suck you in AND spit you back out, but it’s fair to give it cred for the sucking in times, esp if you have such an amazing photo.

I’ve been to Shake Shack once and wasn’t really all that impressed… but this shot makes me want to give it another shot. I’ll put it down as a maybe for my visit next month. I am, however, very much looking forward to the Pambazo you raved about.

Is Shake Shack going to be at Citifield this year?

It didn’t matter if the Mets were winning or losing because you could wait on the long lines at Shake Shack to get a burger and shake.

    Let’s Go Mets…….2010……….!!!!!

NYCFG, lovin’ the food porn shot of that Shack Stack! I’ve been to the MSP and UWS locations and not once have I been disappointed. Yes there are lines, but I have always walked away feeling it was money and time well spent. That has always been the case for me, whether I’m eating at a cheap taco cart, a much-hyped new spot, white linen, greasy spoon or what have you.

@donuts4dinner: I’ve never had surly waiters at the Cozy before and I’ve had my share of burgers there over the years. I think it’s hard to compare Cozy and Shack burgers as they aren’t trying to do the same thing. The Cozy is, to me, more of a “griddle-steamed” burger in the same vein as Paul’s on 2nd Ave & St. Mark’s or Jackson Hole. Plus the Cozy burger is more substantial than a Shack burger. It seems that the Shack is more of an In-N-Out, burger-diaper, L.A. style.

Like ’em both, but for different reasons and crave each one depending on my mood.

[…] Just like Eater had proclaimed (and maybe influenced a tad), it’s Danny Meyer vs. Danny Meyer in the final (link to story)!  I just had a Shackburger at Citi Field for the first time last night and I have to tell you, it’s exceptional. Lawrence (link) works for SNY and gave me the tickets, so when I picked them up from him yesterday, he took a second to convince me of the Shack greatness after reminiscing about one of his latest posts (link). […] had told me about his experience with the shack stack and I was pumped. How can you go wrong by putting cheese-stuffed fried anything on a burger? […]

Can you say ‘yum’? This looks like the ultimate comfort food! Shake Shack is definitely one of our favorite spots in the Upper West Side-good for a quick bite and a great burger.

Guy, the Doctor is BACK!!! Not that anyone cares…

In my insulated life on LI, I cruised down Old Country Road, East of Roosevelt Field, and there was an oasis of deliciousness: Shake Shake for LI! Short line, same quality. By mistake, ordered “Double Hamburger” which comes with NOTHING. Went back, asked for the sauce, costs and extra 50 cents, but worth it. Fries delicious, too.

For the travelers among your acolytes, there’s a Shack and a Blue Smoke in JFK Terminal 4. No need to go to Citi Field to eat any more.

    @Dr. Dyspepsia,

HE LIVES!! Welcome back. Great to hear from you. Can’t believe you miffed the order at Shake Shack but that’s ok, have to start somewhere. You need to go back and get one with cheese and veggies! That’s the full experience! You get the hand cut fries or crinkle cut? Either way delicious. Keep the comments coming!!!
