Best Bite of the Week: 80 Cent Pork Buns at Ying Du Bakery on 38th Street off 8th Ave

Ying Du Pork Bun - NYCFoodGuy.com

Airy, egg-glazed buns filled with tiny chunks of sweet roast pork for just 80 cents 90 cents each? In Midtown?? How can you go wrong? Well, Ying Du’s cleanliness isn’t exactly confidence-instilling (it’s been DOH’d several times), but what can you expect from a place pulled right out of Chinatown and placed mere blocks from Penn Station? This is a rare, red-centered gem in a city where it’s hard to find anything worth eating under $1, especially above Canal Street.

Where’s the inside Food Guy? I’ve been to this place before, the steam table food looks good at the start of the day and then looks as appetizing as old pizza at the end of the day. The buns always look pretty good though, I didn’t realize they were so cheap. Now I know what I’m getting for lunch today. Anybody know any other good lunch spots near Penn Station?

Inside Penn Sta’s LIRR section is Tracks Bar & Grill. Check out their website menu for good burgers, fish-n-chips (great fries, fresh cod), and more … moderate prices.
