Burrito Box, on 9th Avenue between 57th & 58th, offers the best and most affordable Tex Mex delivery in Midtown.

I recommend the Grilled Chicken Burrito ($6.95) with sour cream on the side (it comes with too much in it) and a large order of chips and salsa ($3.85). The salsa is homemade and chunky, filled with chopped onion and garlic. It’s delicious, some of the best I’ve had in NYC, but spare your co-workers and have some gum on the ready.

All meats are flame grilled, tender, and delicious. Friends have spoken highly of the vegetarian burritos ($6.25 to $6.95). The quesadillas are quality too but don’t stand the test of delivery as well as the burritos. Soft tacos, particularly steak ($5.95 for 2), are also tasty, little bullets filled with your choice of meat with lettuce, tomato, and onion. Stay away from the hard tacos, they failed the test of delivery. I also didn’t enjoy the BBQ Chicken.

Here’s a link to my first two Burrito Box reviews with pics of soft tacos and quesadillas.

They were delicious the 1st time, curious how things could get better? Read on…

I love Tuscany Catering and the Burrito Box. Why? Because their food’s delicious and they’re hidden gems. And the fact that they’re in Midtown, the most barren wasteland for affordable, delicious food, only ups their stock. Without further ado, I give you food porn:

Tuscany Catering (55th b/t 5th & 6th Ave.) serves some of the best pizza and sandwiches in Midtown.

It’s main business comes from catering to offices but they also serve food from lunchtime until around 7:30pm. In addition to what you see below they serve a great Chicken Parm.

Sausage & Pepperoni Pan Pie ($3.50/slice)

This bad boy is thick, puffy, and light. It’s crispy and not too doughy and is filling enough to validate the price. The sauce is sweet and the meats are always crisp and tasty.

Regular Pan Pie Slice ($3.50)

Well worth the price because it’s so filling. Not their best slice but I show it to you so you can get a sense of what a slice looks like out of the pan.

More pan pies: eggplant parm and vegetable

A diesel Sicilian pie ($3.50/slice)

Each slice is $3.50 and huge. Sauce is the same as other slices, crust is big and airy, a little doughier than I like and not very crispy. Obviously very filling.

Below is the hot items area where you’ll order your sandwiches. The menu never changes. Meatballs, Eggplant Rollatine, Chicken Cutlets, Baked Ziti, Chicken Noodle Soup are all standard.

Eggplant Rollatine Hero ($6.50) on an Italian hero

I recommend the baguette for all heroes but they usually run out. The Italian bread is also tasty, especially when toasted, so don’t worry. All sandwiches are put together first then placed in the pizza oven to cook. You can see the melty ricotta peeking out on the top half. This was a good hero but in the end I’d go with the Chicken, Bacon, Mozz over both….

Chicken Cutlet, Bacon, Mozzarella hero on Italian bread ($7.50)

I added lettuce, tomato, and some hearty honey mustard as you can see in the 2 photos below. This sandwich is excellent. The bacon was well done, the cutlets are crisp and flavorful while remaining moist inside, and the cheese, as always, is plentiful. This is my new go to sandwich at Tuscany. I might not go with the Honey Mustard next time though, it wasn’t as sweet as I’d have hoped.

Fresh Baked Chocolate Chip Cookies ($1.00 each)

Don’t be fooled by the larger, pre-wrapped cookies on the counter in the back. You want the cookies cooling in the racks next to the register. These puppies are small and overpriced but they’re filled with so much melty, chocolate goodness it’s worth the price to finish your meal with this sweet treat.

The Burrito Box (9th Avenue b/t 57th and 58th St.) is hands down the best Tex-Mex delivery you can get in Midtown.

Find out why and see photos of their delicious steak quesadillas, grilled chicken soft tacos, and awesome chips and salsa here.

Grilled Steak Burrito ($7.95)

This torpedo is short but thick (that’s what she said) and jakked up with juicy steak, moist Spanish rice, black beans, and in my estimation, too much sour cream. I’d opt for sour cream on the side unless you like a lot in each bite. Either way, the steak is juicy, fresh, and flavorful and the beans and rice are cooked well, not too firm. Pair this with a larger order of store made chips and salsa ($2.95) and you’re in business.

Hard shelled beef tacos ($5.55 – two per order)

They’re the only thing in my many times ordering Burrito Box that didn’t really stand the stress of delivery. The cheese coagulated on top of the tacos and the shells got a little soggy, especially at the bottom. Eat these only in store. Go for the soft tacos instead. Check them out here.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this little show. You can’t go wrong with either place. If you know of any hidden gems that you’d like to see on NYCFoodGuy.com please get in touch and let me know.

My previous post detailed my delivery disaster with Blockheads Burritos. As a result, I still hadn’t quelled my Mexican craving. Thanks to my Menu Pages method of finding a restaurant, I took a chance on Burrito Box, a place I’d never heard of. The menu seemed to offer the no frills Tex-Mex I was looking for. For once, I assumed right. I can’t crown it the best after one visit but I’m looking forward to eating here again.

Corn chips, grilled chicken tacos, and half of a grilled chicken and steak quesadilla all for $20 including tip.

Discover my Menu Pages method for finding great new restaurants plus what makes Burrito Box so good after the break.

The Menu Pages method is a simple way to bring some order to an NYC eating conundrum. Can’t decide what you’re in the mood for? Bored of ordering from the same places?

Here’s a step-by-step breakdown for finding a new QUALITY place to eat:

1) Go to http://menupages.com/ and click on your neighborhood on the map

2) Choose your cuisine on the left side of the page

3) Click on the Reviews header link at the top right of the restaurant list

4) Now start clicking on restaurants with at least 10 reviews and a star rating of 4 or better

5) Read the reviews, make sure they don’t all seem like the restaurant put them up there. A good way to detect this is when a review is ultra positive and full of praise for the owners and information on specials and claims of the best food in the neighborhood.

Now you’re off to an educated start on what can sometimes be a daunting journey.

Back to the Burrito Box.

My craving was for tasty Mexican food with no gimmicks and Burrito Box delivered.

Below you’ll see a pile of quesadilla. Mark Lewis and I split a Grilled Chicken and a Steak ($6.95 for each).

Both were delicious but the steak was tastier.

- The steak was hot, not too fatty, and like the chicken, tasted flame-grilled

The Grilled Chicken Tacos ($5.95 for an order of 2) arrived hot and tightly wrapped in aluminum foil. When unraveled, they looked like tiny little bricks of tasty goodness.

Filled with shredded Romaine, chopped tomato, and hot pieces of flame-grilled chicken, these tacos, when smeared with sour cream, salsa, guacamole, and dipped in some of my personal favorite, El Yucateco Habanero hot sauce, were just what the doctor ordered.

Why the Tacos were delicious:

- They were hot and tasted fresh

- The grilled chicken wasn’t sinewy or fatty and tasted like it had been flame-grilled

- Despite their small size, they packed a punch that didn’t leave you overly full

Burrito Box didn’t skimp on the sauces either. Included with my bag of what tasted like freshly fried tortilla chips, was a plastic dish of house made salsa ($2.65 for the chips & salsa).

The salsa was chunky and fresh with pieces of roughly chopped onion and cilantro swimming throughout. Unfortunately, the salsa was a little strong on the garlic, but not offensively so. Overall, it was tasty enough to merit another try.

You can see the generosity I alluded to earlier as far as sauces go:

- Ordinary Pico de Gallo on the left

- Nearly-neon green chile sauce to the right

- Solid guacamole in the middle. They only sent over two little thimbles of guacamole so if you’re big on guac, make sure you ask for extra. For a side order you can choose from three sizes: Small ($0.95), Medium ($1.75), and Large ($2.95).

Interesting Discovery:

After seeking out Burrito Box’s website, I discovered there’s a sister restaurant right next door called Lunch Box. Offering a generic menu of sandwiches, soups, salads, espresso, cappuccino, and juices, NYC Food Guy will make sure to check it out and report back.

————–

In the end, Burrito Box delivered big-time. This may have been my best Menu Pages discovery yet. I plan on ordering from the Box again and I hope they continue to impress because if so I’m ready to anoint them the best Mexican Delivery in Midtown. Keep your eyes peeled for an update.
