Strawberry Shortcake Vanilla Bean Soft Serve Special at Dessert Club, ChikaLicious
September 19, 2011
The great conundrum for every serious food lover: Do you reveal the little places you love at the risk of making it that much harder to get in yourself? Well life is about sacrifices, and fortunately for me, the biggest I’ve had to make are connected to this blog. Without further adieu, I reveal the East Village’s Dessert Club, ChikaLicious. If you’ve been searching for something sweet south of 14th Street and it hasn’t yet taken you here, you’ve been spinning your wheels. Everything is delicious. Read on for my top picks and an explanation of what you’re looking at above.
The chocolate chip cookies ($1.50) are thin and chewy, filled with melty dark chocolate and surrounded by a crisp edge. By far the best in the East Village. The S’mores cupcake ($2.85) features graham cracker-flavored cake filled with chocolate ganache all topped with housemade marshmallow fluff, pre-torched for good measure. The real star, however, is the housemade vanilla bean soft serve ice cream (Small $3.50, Large $4.50). It puts Carvel to shame. It takes many shapes and forms: between two cookies ($5.95), inside a halved eclair shell topped with chocolate sauce ($4.95) and affogoto, topped with a shot of espresso and chocolate pearls ($5.95), to name a few. The newest incarnation, the Strawberry Shortcake soft serve ($6.95), is a special; how long it will last is unknown. It mixes oversized crumbs of pound cake and thinly sliced strawberries with vanilla bean soft serve and it’s all made to order. Go get some now and have your own conundrum.

I am SO HAPPY to see you posting again. Good call with Chikalicious. Given the glorious food allergies, I am limited with what I can eat there, but will live very vicariously through your tantalizing description and photography.

ChikaLicious is literally right around the corner from one of our properties. It definitely is a local favorite, although we have yet to try the Strawberry Shortcake Soft Serve (which looks/sounds amazing, by the way). Hopefully not too many will pick up on this little secret and we can keeps the crowds to a minimum!

Thanks to this post, I am literally using all of my willpower not to jump out of my chair right now, abandon my job (consequences be damned), and take a cab to ChikaLicious…

You’re killing me, another glorious dessert spot that I have been visiting and bringing my friends to for years. Their seasonal kakikoori (shaved ice with green tea flavoring, condensed milk, ice cream and red bean paste) brings me straight back to my childhood living in Tokyo. You just can’t go wrong with anything on this menu though! AND, to have a complete experience, before grabbing these delicious treats, stop by Curry-Ya only a minute walk from Chikalicious for their prized Katsu Curry. I’ll definitely have to try the Strawberry Shortcake soft serve, sounds divine (and Strawberry Shortcake happens to be my favorite Japanese-style cake).
