Father's Office is too fancy, ruins the simple formula that makes California burger joints exceptional. Apple Pan is worth it, they stick to the basics. Tommy's is worth it but go to the Beverly Road location which intersects off Rampart, that is there original store. There is a knock off of Tommy's called Tomboy's which is actually excellent and is in Santa Monica near Father's Office.

Windmill makes a gigantic griddled hot dog, its a lot like a place called Syd's which is also in North Jersey, they have several locations all over. The closest one to NYC is in Westfield, and they were planning to open a Windmill in Hoboken. Many of their locales are near Jersey beaches so that is why I compare them to Nathans. Windmill offers a pretty good range of toppings. I really thought their chili dog was solid.

Mike,
Judging by this comment, you've spent some time in Cali? Fair to assume? I wish I got to Tommy Burger last time I was out there but it was off the beaten path from where we were traveling. Carney I've heard good things about too. Where do you stand on Father's Office? Too Fancy? How about Apple Pan? Is Windmill the same as Galloping Hills?

I never really enjoyed the deep fried hot dog, the griddled hot dog at Windmill is far superior to Rutt's, they also have more toppings, most importantly, Windmill makes Chili dogs. White Manna is pretty lame compared to burger places out West. Places like In N Out, Carney Train, and the Original Tommy's make the best burgers in America.

Just got on this site but I must agree with foozebox - Town Hall Deli Sloppy Joe's are the best. The Ritz is ok - it's the only one around but it's not all it's cracked up to be. Irving's Deli on Rt. 10 in Livingston has the best pastrami on rye sandwiches!!!

That's interesting how they put a meatball shaped hunk of meat on the grill and then smash it into a patty. I noticed them doing that at the burger stand at Water Taxi Beach...probably the second best burger I've had in NYC after Big Nick's. I will have to try that technique this summer!!!

Howfresh,
I agree, the meat is bland but the cheese and onions and pillowy buns really sealed the deal for me.

udse,
You're also correct, it's small and out of the way but in the end, I was truly satisfied by these delectable, greasy little treats. where do you like to get sliders? wheres the best burger you've had recently?

You are not alone Howfresh.

I have lived in Bergen County, NJ for almost 30 years.

I just don't get the appeal of White Manna. The place is uncomfortable to sit and eat. More importantly the burgers are kinda bland.

FG, what up? I think I might be the only person in the blogosphere that doesn't like White Manna (though I read one dude's unimpressed comments from Rachel Ray's Burger Bash). I've had to return several times just to make sure each visit wasn't some sort of abberation. They're just boring to me. The meat is bland, I don't care for the onions and the buns are too sweet. Sloppy too, but I don't penalize for presentation. Otherwise they're great. Am I the only one who feels this way???
