NY Food Tour: Marzipan filled Pignoli Nut Cookies from Veniero’s Italian Bakery

Date August 27, 2008

  • What: These simple cookies are simply delicious.  A macaroon-like cookie filled with chewy almond paste and topped with crunchy pignoli (pine) nuts.  If you’re feeling bold, prepare dip the cookie in some Dulce De Leche ice cream. Unreal.
  • Website: http://www.venierospastry.com/
  • Where: 342 East 11st Street off 1st Avenue NY, NY 10003 212-674-7070
  • Inside info: Have an iced cappuccino with a scoop of espresso gelato at the cafe next to the bakery, its a great place for coffee and dessert.  If you’re taking out from the bakery, however, grab a number as soon as you can and map out your dessert plan.  Mini cheesecakes and canolis are delicious but the chocolate cake with chocolate icing and sprinkles was mediocre.

And, across the street at Tarallucci e Vino, the pignoli cookies are utterly amazing.

    Sweet Freak,

I’ve always walked by Tarallucci and pondered stopping in but always continued on to Veniero’s, which has never disappointed. Maybe I’ll give your spot a try. Any other recommendations?

NYCFG, I’m a little embarrassed to say Tarallucci was my first and (thus far) only pignoli cookie.

As a rule, I’m not big on Italian pastries so I never given them a second glance. Until that fateful night at Tarallucci when I was bowled over…

Now I know I need to explore more. I will let you know if I come across any other must-eat pignolis!

    Sweet Freak,
Well now Im going to have to check out Tarallucci and see what their pignolis are all about. I’m usually not a big Italian pastry fan either but Veniero’s pignolis are just too good to resist.
