Harriet’s Kitchen: Big Bacon Cheeseburger & Fries for $10.02

Date June 18, 2008

Harriet’s Kitchen, on Amsterdam Avenue between 84th & 85th Street, has now provided you with a reason to go to the Upper West Side. You can now enjoy the best burger I’ve had in a long time and then go eat the best chocolate chip cookie on the planet at Levain Bakery.

Harriet’s burger is a huge flame grilled patty broiled to perfection and covered with copious amounts of melted American cheese, grilled bacon and thinly sliced, sweet sauteed onions which have been simmering in a tin over the grill.

It’s accompanied by thin yet hearty skin-on double-fried french fries which turn out crispy and dangerously delicious after emerging from the deep fryer.

The seeded bun is lightly toasted and standard but its chewy and hearty enough to withstand the juice from the massive burger patty.

$10.02 will get you a monster flame-broiled burger covered in cheese, bacon and sauteed onions and accompanied by delicious fries, lettuce, tomato, and a pickle spear.

I live on the UWS and went to Harriets a couple of years ago. I thought that their food was overpriced and not that good. Have they gotten better over the years? BTW, great site.

    Jack,

Thanks for the kind words. I ate at Harriet’s for the first time last week after reading and hearing a lot of good things about the burger. For me, $10.02 for a beast of a burger with bacon, cheese, and fried onions and a healthy offering of fries is a quality price for a filling meal. I can’t speak for the rest of the food.

Do you have any other recommendations for UWS spots?

    NYCFG – Great post.

I have 2 questions for you:

    1) Have you ever been offered a free meal to write a review?

    2) Have you ever tried a fagg0t??? (see link below)

    Dear “Phil”:

I daresay that you inquiry stikes me as highly inappropriate.

    DocChuck,

Why does my inquiry strike you as highly inappropriate? Fagg0ts with onions and gravy are absolutely amazing! have you ever tried them?

I like the burgers at Keeleys, and they came out eith some new belly bangers – the buffalo are really good, but still hungry after. How does Harriets burger compare to the Keeley bacon cheeseburger?

I think Harriet’s kitchen’s burgers are one of the best burgers on the upper west side. I work there, I actually met you yesterday, but the thing that makes the burger the best is the chef Kelly. I hope you used those 100 ketchup packets.

    Molly,

You’re damn right I used those 100 ketchup packets. I used at least 20 of them on my own, 6 just on top of the burger. You can never have enough ketchup.

Harriet’s Burger is defintely one of the best on the Upper West Side. It was a little overcooked last night but still damn good, really filling and great fries.

What is it that Kelly does that makes this burger so delicious?

Which one were you the blonde or the brunette?

Hey Doc: “Daresay”?? Are you an English lord? From the 19th century?

Phil: Please learn the difference between “0” and “o” on the keyboard. Unless your consistent use of the zero in “fagg0t” is some kind of code.

As for the food at Harriet’s: the burger looks GREAT. I’m going. But “ketchup packets”? Is that for real, or an inside joke with Molly. And the chicken looks good, too.

Speaking of ketchup, I read in a reputable food magazine (I think “Cooks Illustrated”) that Hunt’s beat Heinz in blinded taste tests. Anyone here prefer Hunt’s? Anyone even TRIED it?

Hey man this blog is really good, im addicted reading your posts. One question though, do you have trouble going to the toilet with this kinda diet?

    DocHo,

Ha, I can’t believe you just asked me that…. No.

Tell me some good food I don’t have on here but should…

Harriet’s is a great place turning out good food, period. I’ve had the cheese burger several times for all the right reasons. Wonderful. Their chicken and chicken pot pie are wonderful as other examples, too………..Their meatloaf is great. And the fries are some of the best I’ve ever had. It IS a great place. Nice people working there, friendly, appreciative. I go there about five times a year when I’m in NYC.

I am however more than taken aback by anyone who claims the pricing is too high (it is not). Obviously Obamatron liberals who believe that everything should be free if not dirt cheap. Too bad they have never owned their own business………., one that is via the darling liberals over-taxed, over-regulated, especially in NY(C).
